Hereditary diseases and medication

Hereditary (genetic) diseases may pass on to your baby, and sometimes it is necessary to examine this before or during pregnancy. Knowing on forehand that your baby may be affected by a certain disease can help to optimise the care for him/her after birth.

It may also be that a condition is so serious that you decide to terminate the pregnancy. Obviously, this is not an easy choice, and you will need and get the help to make an informed decision from your doctors. There are also many websites providing information about various illnesses.

Medications that you take during pregnancy may affect the health of your baby. However, sometimes medication is required to bring your pregnancy to a good end. Always consult a GP or gynaecologist when you want to start taking medications. And if you are taking medications for a pre-existing issue, inform your doctor about the pregnancy, there may be need to change the medication to a safer type.
